He was drafted by the Minnesota Twins in the 2nd round of the 1979 MLB June Amateur Draft from University of New Orleans. He played Outfielder, Pinch Hitter and Designated Hitter in the Twins minor league from 1979-1981. In 1982, he started off with the Twins AAA team, Outfielder, Toledo Mud Hens, and was called up to MLB and played in 55 games for the Twins. He played for the Twins from 1983-1993.

He has made it to the MLB level playing with the Texas Rangers in 2013, St. Louis Cardinals in 2014 and Tampa Bay Rays in 2015. He is currently playing for the Syracuse Chiefs.

He was drafted by the Oakland Athletics in the 3rd round of the 1985 MLB June Amateur Draft from University of New Orleans. He pitched in the Athletics minor league system till December 11, 1987, when he was traded as part of a 3-team trade by the Oakland Athletics with Kevin Tapani to the New York Mets. The Los Angeles Dodgers sent Bob Welch and Matt Young to the Oakland Athletics. The Los Angeles Dodgers sent Jack Savage to the New York Mets. The Oakland Athletics sent Alfredo Griffin and Jay Howell to the Los Angeles Dodgers. The New York Mets sent Jesse Orosco to the Los Angeles Dodgers. He played in the Mets minor leagues till July 17, 1989 when he was called up to MLB. He pitched in 9 games for the Mets. He pitched for the Mets till October 26, 1992, when he was traded by the New York Mets with a player to be named later and D.J. Dozier to the San Diego Padres for Tony Fernandez. The New York Mets sent Raul Casanova (December 7, 1992) to the San Diego Padres to complete the trade. He pitched for the Padres till November 28, 1994, when he was released by the San Diego Padres. On February 21, 1995, he signed as a Free Agent with the San Francisco Giants. He played in their minor league system till May, 1995, when he signed as a Free Agent with the Boston Red Sox. He pitched in the Red Sox minors till July 26, 1995, when he was released by the Boston Red Sox. On August 1, 1995, he signed as a Free Agent with the Toronto Blue Jays. He pitched in the Blue Jays minors till October 16, 1995, when he was granted Free Agency. On December 1, 1995, he signed as a Free Agent with the Montreal Expos. He pitched in the Expos minors till June 12, 1996 when he was Selected off waivers by the New York Yankees from the Montreal Expos. Whitehurst pitched in 2 games for the Yankee until he was released on September 12, 1996.
